I don't mind 2-3 pounds in my pack, if it means that much versatility. What I'm looking for is a cross between the basic physics of how a rocket stove works, with the portability of a backpacker. At home, it gets fired up when it's too hot inside to cook but I'm craving a stirfry :0) This little monster has a firebrick burn chamber, an enameled top with supports that fits my group-camp wok perfectly, and a wire-frame fuel support. Laughably, they claim this is a backpacking stove, which I neither expected, nor believed. Level of effort to change the burn chamber over to firebrick and cost of stainless piping (to avoid a fast repeat) led me directly to the EcoZoom Dura ( ). Worked beautifully for 3 seasons, until I burned a hole through the piping and a perlite trail followed me back to the car. The variant I made was based off a galvanized feed bucket, some 4" wide pipe, perlite as the insulator and a wok stand (More for car-camping than the canoeing I usually do). Has anyone gotten their hands on one of these badboys (or something similar) yet? I'd love to hear your experiences.Ĭlick to expand.I did! It got me looks from my campmates, until I was able to cook a pound of bacon in under 5 minutes! (Even the vegetarian was impressed, if still hungry o) Plus the angle of the feed chute enables SOME level of auto-feeding. I like the rocket stove idea for hot-and-fast cooking (boiling, frying mostly), and a version that tucks away nicely solves a lot of problems at once (babushka nesting, processing fuel lengths to fit inside the Toaks, etc.). Too little fuel is actually better, since the fire can be restarted, but too much fuel? Then it's just an expensive twig/coal stove until the airflow is restored. I currently use one of these while hauling, but if you aren't SUPER careful with babysitting the fuel feed (over or under), the rocket gasification action can shut down completely. I've grown to love the convenience of larger rocket stoves at home, and wanted something for backpacking. Just curious if anyone's discovered a decent pack-flat rocket stove yet. Please feel free to suggest a more appropriate place to bring up this topic, if I'm wandering too far out of scope for "Cooking & Water purification". First, apologies if this isn't the appropriate forum.
